There is countless types of floors but the most common are porcelain tiles, natural stone, vinyl floors, laminate floors and wooden floors. In commercial premisses very common is epoxy flooring. Every kind of floor needs different approach but there are some general rules for all type of floor cleaning. If it comes to domestic customers the most often we deal with cleaning of kitchen floors, usually slate or other rough surface material as these floors are subject to constant contact with grease which is not so easy to remove and in time builds up in uneven parts of the floor and in grout joints. Cleaning of this type is provided with steam cleaners, slow rpm heavy buffering machine, wet vac and mop. We usually apply degreaser diluted in warm water, agitate dirt with buffering machine and proper gradation of floor pad, vacuum up the dirt and cleaning imperfections with steam cleaning machine, repeating wet vacuum cleaning. Wooden or laminate floors depending on tear and wear are cleaned with delicate PH neutral floor cleaners and mild degreasers if necessary, we use soft buffering pads to agitate the floor and to buff it up after cleaning. We can polish it with high speed polisher if required giving it super shine, high speed polishing of any wooden floor works only if floor has existing varnish, it doesn’t bring any results if varnish is worn out completely. Similar case is with vinyl floors, there are soft types of vinyl floors used mostly in houses and industrial hard wear types used in shops, offices, hospitals, schools etc… It’s easy to damage vinyl floor using wrong gradation of cleaning pads or harsh chemicals. Bleach is the worst enemy of vinyl floors as it is highly acidic and very aggressive, using bleach on vinyl floors causes very quick deterioration because all originally applied layer of polish is eaten out, even using mop which has remaining of bleach is very destructive for vinyl floors. The most important in cleaning of vinyl floors especially in commercial buildings is to balance between removing dirt and scratches and protecting of the top layer. If we are not sure what chemical or pads should we use we choose small square somewhere in less visible part of the floor and we are carefully testing cleaning method on it. We have done so many floors so far that there is no doubt what to use in most cases but it’s better to be safe then sorry. In case when top layer of vinyl floor is deteriorated we can replace it with new one. It’s commonly called “laying polish” but in most cases polish is still present and proper cleaning and polishing with high speed polisher is sufficient. If it comes to larger areas we use scrubber drier machine which is able to clean and dry floor in the same time, this is used mostly where time is crucial factor and large open spaces are available for cleaning. Sometimes when damage is severe the only method to bring back natural stone floor is grinding and honing.
